Celebrating Angela Pumphrey

Angela Pumphrey found a passion for rug hooking back in the '80s when she started hooking with Ethel Bruce and Hazel Parker. She soon became McGown certified and was teaching her own classes. Her strength was fine shading with 3-cut.

Later in life she ventured to a 6-cut which was wide-cut, primitive for her. Angela is especially remembered for her trio of Angels that were featured on the December 1998 cover of ATHA magazine.

Throughout the years she volunteered at many festivals demonstrating rug hooking to help promote the art. Many people were inspired to start hooking after seeing her fine-cut florals and Orientals. Her students often heard her say, "Just love in a little piece right here." A small change could often make a big difference in the look of a rug.

Angela had an excellent eye for color and style. She taught her first dye class at the age of 92. Her jar dip-dyeing method produced spectacular colors.

Angela became the first President of San Antonio's newly formed ATHA Heart of Texas guild in 2005. Our annual Angela Pumphrey Workshop was started in her honor and has continued for 15 years.

She was an enthusiastic supporter of rug hooking, a great teacher, and a close friend. May we, her student "Angels", be surrounded by her loving spirit always. She will be deeply missed.
